MENTOR

Valentin Gherasim

Compressor Operator – Mild Hydrocracking, Rompetrol Rafinare

With the company since 2023

Tell us briefl y about your journey at Rompetrol.
My story at Rompetrol began three years ago, when I applied for the 3rd edition of the program ”Rompetrol School - The first step towards a refinery profession”. That’s when I had the chance to meet amazing people who supported me and contributed to my development. At the end of the apprenticeship, I earned double qualifi cation as a Compressor and Production Field Operator, and since then I’ve been part of Section IV, in the Mild Hydrocracking unit.

How many generation of trainees have you mentored? What motivated you to accept the role of mentor?
This is my first experience having a trainee of my own. The decision to offer me this opportunity – which is also a great responsibility – was made by the people who followed my progress, and I’m grateful for their support. I accepted the role because it feels natural to pass on what I’ve learned and contribute to the development of new colleagues.

What do you consider the best and most challenging aspects of being a mentor?
The most rewarding part is having the opportunity to witness and support the trainee’s professional growth. The most challenging part is fi nding the right balance between offering guidance and allowing the trainee to develop their own style, while also helping them achieve their goals as quickly as possible.

What essentials values do you promote when guiding your trainee’s career?
I emphasize responsibility, safety, and professionalism. Respect for colleagues and a continuous desire to learn are essential for healthy growth in this field.

How do you adapt your mentoring style to your trainee’s needs and personality?
I try to understand how Cosmin learns and adjust my approach accordingly. Sometimes more explanations are needed, other times more hands-on practice. Patience and communication are key.

How do you maintain balance between offering support and encouraging autonomy?
I provide support when needed, but I also encourage initiative and independent thinking. Trust builds over time, and autonomy comes with experience.

Describe Cosmin in three words:
Serious, committed, receptive.

TRAINEE

Cosmin Bida

Compressor Operator – Mild Hydrocracking, Rompetrol Rafinare

With the company since 2026

Where and how did your journey with the company begin?
My story at Rompetrol began recently, last autumn, when I applied for the 6th edition of "Rompetrol School – The first step towards a refinery profession”. Over four months, I completed an intensive theoretical and practical training program, after which I was assigned to the Compressor Operator position in the Mild Hydrocracking (MHC) unit. For me, this apprenticeship was more than just a professional step-it was a challenge that I successfully overcame.

What was your biggest concern when you joined the company? How did you overcome it?
At first, my biggest concern was integrating into a new team and adapting quickly. Fortunately, my colleagues were very open and helped me feel comfortable from the start. I found a close-knit team that was willing to offer support, which gave me confidence and helped me adapt much more quickly. That’s why I’m grateful to my colleagues and want to thank them.

What is the greatest advantage of having a mentor?
The biggest advantage is the experience they pass on and the direction they provide at the beginning. During the Rompetrol School program, I had the support of experienced professionals dedicated to training the new generation – Mrs. Laura Ţiclete, Mr. Tiberiu Crudu and Mr. Techin Abdula. Later, once I became a Compressor Operator in the MHC unit, my mentor was Valentin Gherasim, a graduate of the same program. His journey from trainee to mentor in a short time shows how much this program can help you grow.

What is the most important advice or feedback you’ve received from your mentor?
One of the most valuable things I’ve learned is that in this profession, the foundation is built on theoretical knowledge, attention to detail, and professionalism. Together, these form the basis of performance and career growth.

How did your mentor help you integrate into the team?
Valentin helped me integrate from the very beginning. He has been open and always willing to share his experience. His advice and constant support have meant and still mean a lot to me.
