KazMunayGas International (KMGI) and Societatea de Administrare a Participațiilor în Energie (SAPE) have signed on 26th October 2018 the association agreement for the establishment of The Kazakh - Romanian Energy Investment Fund, in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Romanian State and KMG International/Rompetrol.

Retail Network Development & Cogeneration Power Plant

The Kazakh Romanian Energy Investment Fund is built upon a transparent investment policy, with clear criteria and mechanisms for evaluating the investment projects, both shareholders having equal rights to propose projects for financing.

In May 2019, through the Decision of the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders, the first two major investments of the Fund were approved - the construction of a cogeneration plant on the Petromidia platform and the development of the local gas station network.

By the end of 2022, the total level of investments of the Fund for the approved energy projects amounts to USD 315 million, the portofolio being represented by the development of the retail network and the construction of a new cogeneration plant.

Latest updates

February 2025

Calik Enerji, along with specialists from Rompetrol Energy, has started tests on synchronizing the gas turbines with the National Energy System and integrating the Cogeneration Plant with the Petromidia refinery in Navodari.

March 2024

KMG Rompetrol Development is implementing an e-Mobility project co-financed by the European Union, consisting of 11 charging stations (300 kW each with two 150 kW charging points) and the upgrading of the grid connection for 11 stations (with a capacity of 600 kVA each) in CNAIR1 locations.

Other two new service centers with Rompetrol gas stations recently opened on A1 highway (Orăştie – Sibiu section) by Rompetrol Downstream – the retail division of KMG International Group in Romania, as a part of the package of 12 integrated centers amounting above 40 mln. USD with financing provided by the Kazakh Romanian Energy Investment Fund.

Rompetrol Downstream opened two new integrated service centers on the A1 Highway (Nadlac - Sibiu section), near Recas, Timis County (km 481+646 left and right), part of a 12-station package financed by the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund.

The Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KREIF) and Rompetrol Downstream opened the first 4 integrated service centers on the A1 highway (Nadlac – Sibiu section), near Pecica and Orăștie, as part of a 12-center package, with a total investment of over 40 million USD.

November 2022

Rompetrol Energy, part of the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund, announces the successful delivery of two Siemens gas turbines, to be integrated into the new cogeneration plant.

July 2022

The Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund contracted financing of 119 million lei (approx. 24.75 million USD) from OTP Bank Romania to accelerate the retail program and develop new fuel stations.

May 2022

The Fund successfully contracted a syndicated loan of EUR 83 million for the construction of a new cogeneration plant on the Petromidia Refinery platform.

August 2021

KMG International Group (Rompetrol) opened 10 new gas stations in various regions of Romania. Two stations were developed under the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund.

The Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund initiates the construction of a new cogeneration plant at Petromidia.

The Fund reached 10 new stations opened during 2020.

August 2020

Contract signed for the construction of the Cogeneration plant on the Petromidia platform. Four new filling stations became operational: Clinceni, Oradea, Curtea de Argeș, and Călimănești.
