MENTOR

Nicolae Nedelcu

Sustainability Manager, Rompetrol Well Services

In Rompetrol since 2018

How many generations of trainees have you dealt with so far? What motivated you to accept the mentor role?
I’m now mentoring my second generation of trainees, and I chose to take on this role to share my experience and contribute to the professional development of new colleagues. I strongly believe in the value of mentorship and the impact it can have on young professional's growth.

What do you consider the most beautiful aspect of being a mentor? And the most challenging one?
The most rewarding aspect of being a mentor is seeing the trainee’s progress and the confidence they gain along the way. The most challenging part, however, is finding the balance between offering support and allowing space for learning through mistakes - because sometimes, you have to know when to step in and when to let them take risks

What essential values do you promote when guiding your trainee in their career?
The core values I promote are integrity, perseverance, openness to learning, and mutual respect. I believe these values are fundamental for healthy personal development and for building a strong, cohesive team.

How do you balance providing support and encouraging autonomy?
To maintain a balance between support and autonomy, I set clear goals and help when needed, while also encouraging the trainee to make decisions and learn from their mistakes. I believe that autonomy fosters confidence and personal development.

Well Services Engineer, Rompetrol Well Services

What made you apply for the Together We Grow - Rompetrol Traineeship program?
I applied for the Together We Grow – Rompetrol Traineeship program because I wanted real handson experience in a professional environment where I could learn from experienced people. I saw this program as a real opportunity to put my theoretical knowledge into practice and to better understand my professional direction.

What was your biggest fear when you first joined the company? How did you overcome it?
My biggest fear when I joined the company was not living up to expectations, especially being in a new environment with experienced professionals. I wanted to make a good impression, but at the same time, I was afraid of making mistakes. I gradually overcame this fear through continuous learning and by asking questions whenever I was unsure.

What is the greatest advantage of having a mentor at this stage of your career?
The greatest advantage of having a mentor at this stage of my career is the guidance I receive. He gives me confidence in my own decisions, supports me when challenges arise, and encourages me to step out of my comfort zone. Being able to have open discussions with someone so experienced is an incredibly valuable resource.

What is the most important piece of advice/feedback you’ve received from your mentor?
The most important advice I received from my mentor was, "Don’t be afraid to ask for help or admit when you don’t know something." At first, I felt like I always had to prove I could manage everything on my own, but I realized that being open to learning and collaboration is far more valuable.

What skills or competencies would you like to further develop?
One of the skills I want to develop further is effective communication, especially in difficult situations or when giving and receiving feedback. I believe it is essential for good teamwork and for building strong professional relationships.
