Rompetrol has acquired a state-of-the-art 3D digital mammography unit with tomosynthesis technology and a specialized breast ultrasound machine equipped with linear probes. These devices are now in use at the Năvodari Multifunctional Health Center. The total investment amounts to 1,850,000 lei.
The new equipment supports the center’s integration into the National Breast Cancer Screening Program, through which Romania aims to reduce breast cancer mortality by 5% by 2030. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mammography screening is recommended for women aged 50 to 69, the age group with the highest breast cancer incidence.
"This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to support the health of the communities where we operate. By equipping the Năvodari Multifunctional Health Center with cutting-edge medical devices, we are helping to improve access to preventive and early diagnostic services, essential for enhancing the quality of life of local residents," stated Erik Sagiyev, CEO Rompetrol – KMG International.
The Năvodari Multifunctional Health Center, inaugurated in 2020, serves the Dobrogea region by expanding the availability and quality of healthcare services. Covering over 800 square meters, the facility offers both outpatient and emergency care, and includes an external SMURD Emergency Unit, medical testing laboratory, radiology, surgery, neurology, obstetrics-gynecology, dermatology, and orthopedics-traumatology.
Since the center’s opening, Rompetrol has consistently supported its development by providing modern radiology equipment, obstetrics-gynecology medical devices, and immunology and microbiology analyzers for the medical laboratory. The value of these investments between 2022 and 2024 exceeds 2 million lei.
"Since taking on this role, I have focused on transforming the Năvodari Multifunctional Health Center into a key medical facility. Thanks to Rompetrol's support, the center is now equipped with a state-of-the-art mammography unit, complementing the essential diagnostic tools we already have. We continue to work toward expanding the range of medical services, and the support provided by Rompetrol is truly invaluable," said Raluca Ştefan, Legal Advisor and Manager of the Constanţa County Emergency Clinical Hospital.
The city of Năvodari has over 44,000 residents, of whom approximately 22,000 are women aged over 30—a group for whom annual breast ultrasound screening is recommended.
"The health of Năvodari’s residents remains a top priority for our local administration. Together with the Constanţa County Emergency Clinical Hospital and our partner Rompetrol - KMG International, we have carried out numerous joint initiatives over the past four years to equip the Năvodari Multifunctional Health Center with modern radiology, obstetrics-gynecology, and medical laboratory equipment—always with the goal of providing quality medical services close to home. I am pleased that we have completed another successful project, and that women over 40 can now access free 3D mammography with a referral from their family doctor, as well as specialized ultrasound scans where recommended. I look forward to the inclusion of the Năvodari Multifunctional Health Center in the national screening network, as I want the very best for our community's health," stated Florin Chelaru, Mayor of Năvodari.
The center is now equipped with an Italray Dtomo digital mammography system, featuring a high-resolution 85-micron detector, capable of performing both 2D and 3D (tomosynthesis) mammograms in a single compression. Tomosynthesis improves the detection rate of suspicious lesions by up to 25% compared to conventional 2D mammography, playing a vital role in the early diagnosis of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue. Where necessary, mammography can be complemented by breast ultrasound using a high-frequency matrix linear probe.
Screening is recommended for women over 40 without a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, as well as for women over 30 who have a family history (mother or sister diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer).
These services are available free of charge for patients referred by their family doctor to the Gynecology specialty. Uninsured patients can also access the services for a fee, with a medical referral.
As part of its commitment to local communities, Rompetrol has supported the modernization of the regional healthcare system in recent years by funding and equipping the plastic surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, and emergency departments; helping establish a center for rare and autoimmune diseases at the Constanţa County Emergency Clinical Hospital; equipping the oncology ward at the Palazu Mare Pneumophysiology Hospital; and donating ophthalmology, cardiology equipment, and medical furniture to the health center in Corbu, which serves 6,500 residents in the villages of Luminiţa, Vadu, and Corbu.
