Rompetrol, in partnership with the Foundation for SMURD, has completed the installation of semi-automatic defibrillators in 80 fuel distribution stations across Romania, as well as in several public spaces in Constanţa and Prahova counties. The project represents one of the largest national initiatives aimed at increasing emergency response capacity for victims of cardiac arrest, with a total investment exceeding RON 1 million.
“For Rompetrol, the safety of employees, customers and communities remains a priority. Rompetrol stations are visited daily by tens of thousands of people, and placing defibrillators in these locations creates a major advantage in critical situations. The Foundation for SMURD has been our partner for 16 years, and together we are committed to contributing to the strengthening of the national emergency system and enhancing public safety,” said Zhanibek Nugertayev, General Manager of Rompetrol Downstream.
The defibrillators have been installed in high-traffic areas – stations located on national roads, busy routes, highways and frequently visited public spaces – in order to significantly increase survival chances in the first critical minutes, until medical teams arrive. Rompetrol employees from the station network have also benefited from specialised training in the use of defibrillators and the provision of first aid.
“Rompetrol’s contribution to this project strengthens the first-response network in the critical early minutes and demonstrates that private sector involvement can generate direct and immediate benefits. Every minute gained before the arrival of medical teams is essential, having a direct impact on the victim’s prognosis, and rapid access to such a device offers the community a real chance of survival,” said Dr Raed Arafat, President of the Foundation for SMURD.
In Prahova County, the project was implemented in partnership with the Ploieşti City Hall, with semi-automatic defibrillators installed in six heavily frequented public spaces, such as public institutions, markets and recreational areas. Similar equipment has also been installed in five locations in Constanţa County, contributing to the expansion of the rapid intervention network in the region.
The locations of the defibrillators can be found on the dedicated map in the Department for Emergency Situations application, as well as on the Fii Pregătit.ro platform.
The collaboration between Rompetrol and the Foundation for SMURD is one of the longest-standing and most consistent public–private partnerships in Romania in the field of health and safety. Launched in 2009, this strategic partnership was built around a common mission: strengthening emergency response capacity and providing real support to communities across the country.
Over the years, Rompetrol has supported the Foundation for SMURD through multiple projects with direct impact on the emergency medical system, including equipping SMURD training centres with modern equipment for medical staff training, acquiring essential devices for pre-hospital interventions, supplying fuel for the intervention fleet, and modernising operational bases. At the same time, the company has invested in emergency education projects, encouraging increased awareness and civic responsibility.
