KMG International (Rompetrol) has implemented a comprehensive energy consumption optimization program at the Petromidia and Vega refineries, in the context of the current conditions in the National Energy System (SEN) and the pressure on the network in the Dobrogea area, following the shutdown of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.

The measures, applied in stages starting August 5, aim to reduce consumption during peak periods, without affecting current activities and technological processes. These include optimizing operational programs, rescheduling activities outside critical intervals, and adjusting auxiliary consumption. The measures already in place allow for a reduction in the electrical load by approximately 5 MW during peak periods.

An example is the coking plant at Petromidia, where the petroleum coke cutting operation is optimized to be performed outside the critical interval 19:00–23:00. Thus, the electrical load is reduced by approximately 2.2 MW, without impacting the technological process.

The cogeneration plant operated by Rompetrol Energy has a capacity of approximately 80 MW and meets the electricity needs of the Petromidia platform, estimated at 60-70 MW, depending on the operating regime. By optimizing consumption during peak periods, the additional available energy will be delivered to the SEN, contributing to balancing the Dobrogea network.

Under conditions of optimal operation of the cogeneration plant, it permanently delivers between 8 and 10 MW to the national system, during the critical period 19:00–23:00. With the optimization of consumption at the Petromidia refinery level, but also due to constant investments in the automation and modernization of the facilities, Rompetrol Energy has the capacity to increase deliveries to the SEN by over 50%, reaching over 13 MW during critical consumption periods.

Additionally, starting August 22, the Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) unit will enter a planned shutdown procedure, after ensuring the necessary stocks for customers. The measure will allow for a further reduction in energy consumption of approximately 8 MW.

At the distribution network level, KMG International is optimizing the use of electric-vehicle charging stations and recommends that users charge outside the 19:00–22:00 interval.

All actions are implemented in a way that does not affect refining and distribution activities. The priority of the KMGI Group remains maintaining the Petromidia and Vega refineries in optimal operating parameters and at high production levels, in order to ensure the availability of fuels on the domestic market.
