The commissioning of the gas turbines was attended by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of KazMunayGas, Askhat Khassenov, the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Romania, H.E. Yerlik Ali, the Chairman of the Directorate of SAPE, Bogdan Stănescu, as well as the CEO of Calik Enerji, Temel Kotil, highlighting the strategic importance of the project at both governmental and industrial levels.
The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) general contractor, Calik Enerji, together with specialists from Rompetrol Energy, completed the testing program, the synchronization of the gas turbines with the National Power System, and the full integration of the plant with the Petromidia Năvodari refinery - key milestones for the commencement of commercial operation.
The total value of the investment amounts to USD 164 million. The cogeneration power plant has a production capacity exceeding 70 MW of electricity, currently fully covering the energy requirements of the Petromidia refinery and creating the conditions for the delivery of electricity to the national grid, depending on the operating regime.
The use of Siemens SGT-750 gas turbines represents a first for Romania’s energy sector, these units being widely recognized for their high efficiency, operational flexibility, and reliability in industrial operation.
The project is implemented through the Kazakh–Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KREIF), a fund established in October 2018 by KMG International (80%), a subsidiary of KazMunayGas, and the Energy Participation Management Company - SAPE (20%), representing the Romanian state. The role of KREIF is to facilitate the development and operation of strategic energy projects with a direct impact on energy security and the competitiveness of the Romanian economy.
During the official visit to Romania, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of KMG also visited the Vega refinery (Ploieşti) and the Petromidia refinery (Năvodari), where he reviewed operational and financial results, as well as the activity of the Rompetrol fuel distribution network, reaffirming the Group’s interest in the integrated development of Romania’s energy and refining value chain.
