KMG International (Rompetrol) has recently integrated a new retail IT system that serves the entire fuel station network managed by Rompetrol Downstream in Romania. During 2026, the system will also be extended and finalized in the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, and Georgia, where Rompetrol operates extensive fuel station networks.
Available at 500 Rompetrol stations, the new IT (Information Technology) system uses Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain-based technology, and Machine Learning to streamline internal processes. Through a major effort by the Rompetrol teams from the IT and operational segments, the new system was replaced without disrupting station activity and ahead of the agreed execution schedule.
“In each station, within an average of three hours, the specialized teams made a rapid transition to the new system, installing the new software and hardware, including testing prior to opening the sales. Achieving the replacement of retail, card management, and fiscal systems across more than 20% of petrol stations in the Romanian market within a 3-month period is an exceptional performance, made possible by the considerable support from the top management and our partners, major factors in integrating a digital solution designed to strengthen Rompetrol’s position in the Romanian market”, said Askhat Katrenov, Program Manager within KMG International.
The new retail system is a modern solution that supports all the basic operations of a fuel station, including POS, pump control, payments, loyalty, shop, gastro, electronic services, and real-time data integration. Thus, station staff operations will be significantly simplified by automating daily processes, including price updates, inventory management, and reporting.
It is still using Rompetrol Fill&Go cards, which will be gradually replaced by new contactless and virtual cards in a future development phase, projected to begin this year. Additionally, it is still possible to use Ring technology (automated recognition), and plate-recognition software will also be installed this year.
At the same time, the new retail system uses a series of smart tools to enhance Rompetrol’s services and efficiency. Artificial Intelligence (AI) powers smarter, faster service at every Rompetrol station. These tools will support future development, which will include automating daily operations, so staff can focus on delivering a positive customer experience.
Machine Learning analyzes sales patterns and predicts demand, ensuring the customer's favorite products are always in stock. It generates precise sales forecasts – minimum, estimated, and maximum – for the week ahead, ensuring stations are always prepared to meet customer needs.
Blockchain enables security and transparency as core elements of the new system. The technology protects customer data and transactions, ensuring every payment and loyalty point is processed securely and reliably. This advanced security also builds trust for the partners and commercial clients.
For the Rompetrol customers, the benefits can be summarized in faster, smoother service (swift transactions and minimal wait times, thanks to automated processes and real-time data integration), a personalized experience (the system predicts demand and keeps the favorite products in stock) and effortless loyalty & payments (from Rompetrol Fill&Go cards to upcoming contactless and virtual options, earning rewards and paying are simplified).
The system uses new technologies that enable Rompetrol stations to enhance their capabilities to support the speed and scalability customers require amid the emergence of new digital tools, ensuring quality service.
Rompetrol Downstream operates a network of 1,217 fuel distribution points, consisting of Rompetrol-owned stations, Rompetrol Partner stations, as well as mobile stations - Rompetrol Express - and internal bases (tanks of 5, 9, and 20 cubic meters installed within companies in various fields such as transport, construction, agriculture, etc.).
In addition, the company operates six fuel depots nationwide, approximately 280 autogas (LPG) filling stations, and over 7,000 distribution points for Rompetrol LPG cylinders and household cylinders.
