Rompetrol Energy, the operator of the cogeneration plant on the Petromidia platform, recorded solid operational results during the period December 30, 2025 – April 30, 2026, successfully supporting the technological processes of the country’s largest refinery – Petromidia Năvodari.

The plant, which has passed all necessary tests and certifications for continuous operation, produced approximately 180,000 MWh of electricity in the first four months.

Around 25% of the total was delivered to the National Energy System, confirming its important role in balancing electricity production and distribution in the Dobrogea region. The value of the energy transferred to the system exceeded 6 million dollars.

“The cogeneration plant represents an essential pillar of stability both for the Petromidia refinery and for the National Energy System, contributing decisively to balancing the grid in Dobrogea. The performance achieved reflects the professionalism, discipline, and responsibility of our team, built and strengthened alongside engineers with solid expertise in the cogeneration field. By integrating state-of-the-art equipment and through the coordinated operation of the entire system, we ensure operation at the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and reliability,” said Boris Bucur, General Manager of Rompetrol Energy.

The two units (turbines and steam boilers) in the plant’s configuration also produced 300,000 tons of technological steam, quantities sufficient to support the thermal and mechanical processes specific to the Petromidia refinery.

The plant can also operate in island mode, without directly depending on the National Energy System in the event of network disturbances, providing an additional level of safety for operational processes at the Petromidia refinery. Recently, the plant was involved in an exercise that tested this capability.

The integration of the cogeneration plant reduces the Petromidia refinery's energy dependence, optimizes costs, and provides greater control over resources, with the potential to positively affect the financial performance of the KMG International (Rompetrol) Group.

We recall that, starting December 30, 2025, Rompetrol Energy became the exclusive operator of the plant, ensuring a stable flow of electricity for the Năvodari platform, in the range of 60–80 MWh, and supplying up to 180 tons of technological steam per hour.

Commissioning tests and technical verifications were carried out between February and December 2025, during which the two gas turbines, measurement and control systems, natural gas and refinery gas supply installations, and the steam circuits intended for the refinery were validated.

Electricity production began in the spring of last year with the synchronization of the SGT-750 turbines with the National Energy System. Starting in autumn, the plant was able to simultaneously supply electricity and steam once the heat recovery boilers became operational.

In October and December, over a period of 28 days, the endurance test was carried out – the final and most complex step before acceptance – which confirmed the stable operation of the plant under real operating conditions.

The SGT-750 turbines, the most important equipment installed, use gaseous fuel (a mixture of natural gas and refinery gas) and each generates about 39 MWh of electricity.

The use of Siemens SGT-750 gas turbines represents a first for Romania’s energy sector, these pieces of equipment being recognized for their high efficiency, operational flexibility, and reliability in industrial operation.

Rompetrol Energy was established in 2012 to develop and operate the cogeneration plant, a project that represented one of the priority directions supported through the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KREIF).

This project confirms KMG International’s (Rompetrol) commitment to remain a strategic investor in Romania, with a direct contribution to the modernization of the energy sector and to supporting the national economy.
