The 20th edition of the George Enescu International Competition takes place from August 23 to September 19 in Bucharest, bringing together young musicians from around the world for a landmark anniversary edition built around a new perspective: from competition to artistic development.

The theme of the 2026 edition, “In Pursuit of Excellence,” is rooted in the idea that excellence is not a destination, but an ongoing process. Artistic rigor and virtuosity are intertwined with the ability to listen, communicate, gain stage experience, and create music together.
The opening concert, held on August 23, officially marked the launch of the Competition and included the Composition Section Awards Gala, during which the winners of the 2026 edition were announced.
Until September 19, violinists, cellists, and pianists from around the world will take part in the Competition’s live stages, in a program that combines the competition itself with masterclasses, concerts, professional mentoring, and sessions dedicated to stage presence and personal well-being.
This year’s edition recorded a record 819 applications from 58 countries, and following the pre-selection process, 150 young musicians were invited to Bucharest.
An important new feature is the semifinal round, where, for the first time, the six contestants in each section will take part in a “play & conduct” format, performing alongside the Radio Chamber Orchestra without a conductor. The contestants will simultaneously act as soloists and ensemble leaders, challenged to demonstrate not only virtuosity, but also their ability to listen, communicate, inspire, and build music together.
The Competition is also expanding its artistic program to several cities across Romania through “Enescu in the Country,” a series of recitals, masterclasses, and concerts reaching Constanţa, Sibiu, and Brăila. The program brings renowned artists and musicians taking part in the 2026 edition closer to audiences nationwide, offering new opportunities to discover the participating artists and musicians.
In Constanţa, on September 8 at 7:00 p.m., the “Sergiu Celibidache” Hall of the “Regina Maria” Art High School will host a recital by pianist Raluca Ştirbăţ. The event is a collaboration between Artexim, organizer of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition, and the “Oleg Danovski” National Opera and Ballet Theatre, opening up a new perspective for the cultural life of the region.
